Pool Chemical FAQ
Maintaining a well balanced pool is essential for a clean, safe, and enjoyable swimming experience. It not only ensures the cleanliness of the water but also prevents damage to your pool’s structure and equipment.
Normal chlorine levels are between 1 ppm – 5 ppm. Chlorine prevents bacteria and algae growth. The consequences of letting your pool water go untreated will result in water discoloration, bad smells, algae growth, and negative health consequences. High chlorine levels can cause skin and eye irritation as well as damage pool equipment.
A pH above 7.8 reduces the effectiveness of chlorine. When the pH is too high it can cause skin rashes, cloudy water, and scaling on the pool plaster and equipment.
A pH below 7.2 means your pool water is acidic which can cause corrosion of pool surfaces and equipment. Acidic water will burn your eyes and cause skin irritation, leaving your skin dry and itchy.
Normal range 70 ppm – 120 ppm
Maintaining proper alkalinity is crucial as it prevents sudden changes in pH. Total Alkalinity is a buffer, keeping pH where it should be.
Normal range 200 ppm – 350 ppm
Calcium hardness levels make managing pool chemistry easier and more cost-effective. Calcium provides stability, low calcium can cause the eroding of the tile grout and the delamination of plaster surfaces. When the calcium level drops below the normal range, the water will begin to take what it needs from any part of your pool. Low calcium contributes to efflorescence (also known as calcium build-up) coming through the plaster and grout.
